The Letter of Intent

by Charlie on February 6, 2009

With all the hoopla surrounding college football’s signing day, it seems a good time to take a look at the letter of intent (LOI) and what signing really means for top prospects.

The commitment a student-athlete makes when signing a letter of intent is exceptionally one-sided. Super-agent Arn Tellem describes it like this:

Clearly, this is a one-sided document in favor of the institutions. It requires a one-way commitment from the player and not a mutual commitment from the school. There is no commitment to even admit the player to the school.
