All-Star Reserves Announced

by Charlie on January 29, 2010

Thanks to a series of leaks yesterday afternoon, there wasn’t much suspense leading up to last night’s announcement of the Eastern and Western Conference All-Star reserves. The biggest surprises — the election of noted knucklehead Zach Randolph to his first all-star team, and the selection of Atlanta’s Al Horford over New York’s David Lee and Milwaukee’s Andrew Bogut — had already made the headlines.

Here are your 2010 NBA All-Star rosters, in their entirety:

Eastern Conference

Starters:

  • Dwyane Wade – Guard, Miami Heat
  • Allen Iverson – Guard, Philadelphia 76ers
  • LeBron James – Forward, Cleveland Cavaliers
  • Kevin Garnett – Forward, Boston Celtics
  • Dwight Howard – Center, Orlando Magic

Reserves:

  • Rajon Rondo – Guard, Boston Celtics
  • Derrick Rose – Guard, Chicago Bulls
  • Joe Johnson – Guard, Atlanta Hawks
  • Gerald Wallace – Forward, Charlotte Bobcats
  • Chris Bosh – Forward, Toronto Raptors
  • Paul Pierce – Forward, Boston Celtics
  • Al Horford – Center, Atlanta Hawks

Western Conference

Starters:

  • Kobe Bryant – Guard, Los Angeles Lakers
  • Steve Nash – Guard, Phoenix Suns
  • Carmelo Anthony – Forward, Denver Nuggets
  • Tim Duncan – Forward, San Antonio Spurs
  • Amar’e Stoudemire – Center, Phoenix Suns

Reserves:

  • Brandon Roy – Guard, Portland Trail Blazers
  • Chris Paul – Guard, New Orleans Hornets
  • Deron Williams – Guard, Utah Jazz
  • Dirk Nowitzki – Forward, Dallas Mavericks
  • Kevin Durant – Forward, Oklahoma City Thunder
  • Zach Randolph – Forward, Memphis Grizzlies
  • Pau Gasol – Center, Los Angeles Lakers

It seems clear that the coaches, when selecting the all-star reserves, put a lot of weight on team performance; every one of the players selected comes from a team with a record of .500 or better. In fact, Allen Iverson — the fans’ most controversial selection — is the only all-star from a losing team.

The Celtics will have the most players in the game, with Garnett starting and Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo coming off the bench. The Suns, Lakers and Hawks have two all-stars each; Phoenix is the only team with more than one starter.

Of course, these rosters may not be final. Players like Iverson, Garnett and Brandon Roy could opt to use the weekend to rest and rehab nagging injuries, which might open spots on the team for the likes of David Lee, Shaquille O’Neal, Chauncey Billups or Jason Kidd.

Injury replacements are named at the discretion of NBA commissioner David Stern, so don’t be surprised if Shaq — one of the more entertaining all-stars in recent memory — or Kidd — whose Mavericks are host to this year’s event — get the call.
