Gilbert Arenas’ suspension will run through the remainder of the 2009-10 NBA season, Yahoo! Sports is reporting.
Arenas met with NBA commissioner David Stern earlier today to discuss the terms of his suspension. According to unnamed league sources, the terms are a plea bargain of sorts; Stern offered Arenas a shorter suspension, provided Arenas agreed not to challenge the ruling or the Players Association file a grievance on his behalf.
The settlement leaves unresolved the question of Arenas’ status with the Wizards. The team is expected to attempt to void Arenas contract, which runs through the 2013-14 season at an average of $20 million per year. But the Wizards are unlikely to take action until criminal proceedings are completed.
Arenas plead guilty to felony violations of Washington DC’s strict gun laws, and is scheduled to be sentenced on March 26th.
Teammate Javaris Crittenton — the other lead player in this long-running drama — will receive a similar suspension. Crittenton plead guilty to a misdemeanor weapons possession charge this week and was sentenced to one year of probation.
