Bad News Looms for Connecticut

One of the first rules of the PR business: if there’s a story you want the public to ignore, release it on a Friday. So the fact that the University of Connecticut is releasing details of an internal investigation of alleged recruiting violations on the Friday afternoon of Memorial Day weekend is a pretty good indication the administration wants this story buried.

If they could include the details with the golf balls and old tires being used to plug up the Deepwater Horizon, my guess is they would.

Another ominous sign: two members of Jim Calhoun’s coaching staff — assistant coach Patrick Sellers and director of basketball operations Beau Archibald — resigned yesterday. Resigning in advance of being named in a scandal is becoming a common theme in college hoops these days — last month Oklahoma assistant Oronde Taliaferro jumped ship just before he was tied to the improper payments made to Sooner players.

The investigation at UConn stems from improper phone calls allegedly made by the staff while recruiting Nate Miles, and the actions of a UConn booster and all-around shady character Josh Nochimson — who may have provided other inappropriate benefits to recruits.

Miles never actually played for the Huskies; he was expelled from the school just after his arrival in Storrs.
