Blake Griffin Out for the Year

by Charlie on January 15, 2010

Clippers forward Blake Griffin — the first overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft — will have season-ending surgery on his ailing knee. Griffin has been sidelined since the Clippers’ final preseason game due to a stress fracture in his left patella.

This is the second time in recent memory that the NBA’s first overall pick has missed his entire rookie season. Greg Oden – the top pick in the 2007 draft – missed the entire 2007-08 season after having microfracture surgery on his right knee. Oden, unfortunately, is in the process of missing this season as well; he broke the patella in his left knee in December.

Given this announcement, this seems like a good time to look back at Bill Simmons’ column from June, 2009. Published just after the Clippers won the NBA Draft lottery, the Sports Guy wrote an open letter to Griffin, saying:

The odds are overwhelming that bad things will happen to you until you leave. And you will. The Clippers are cursed.

Re-reading that column today is decidedly creepy.
