In a battle of mid-majors playing at a very high level, the team with tournament experience won out in the end. Butler made the key stops down the stretch and ended the game on a 7-2 run, beating Murray State, 54-52. Butler reaches the Sweet Sixteen for the second time in four years.
A deflection by Butler’s Gordon Hayward kept Murray State from even attempting the sort of buzzer-beater that got the Racers past Vanderbilt in the first round.
Ronald Noreed led the Bulldogs with 15 points and six assists.
