Connecticut Women Win 71st Straight

by Charlie on March 9, 2010

UConn’s 59-44 win over Notre Dame in the Big East semifinals last night was the team’s 71st in a row — breaking the all-time record set by Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird and this same University of Connecticut between November 2001 and March 2003. Connecticut hasn’t lost a game since they fell to Stanford in the 2008 Final Four — and they’ve beaten every opponent by double figures.

The 2010 edition will be the prohibitive favorite to win a 16th Big East title and seventh national championship. The conference title will be decided on Tuesday night, when UConn plays West Virginia.

To overstate the obvious, these women are scary good! UConn can be rightfully VERY proud of what they have accomplished. There are a number of excellent women’s programs throughout the country. But basically, there’s UConn, and then everyone else.
