Gilbert Arenas Suspended Indefinitely

by Charlie on January 6, 2010

The NBA has suspended Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas “indefinitely” and without pay for his violation of the NBA’s policy on firearms. League commissioner David Stern said Arenas is “not currently fit to take the court,” and that Arenas’ actions will “ultimately result in a substantial suspension, and perhaps worse.”

Many observers thought Stern would wait to see if criminal charges were filed before taking action — Arenas could potentially face up to five years in prison for carrying an unregistered firearm in the District of Columbia, and there’s a chance he and teammate Javaris Crittenton could face assault charges as well. Arenas probably didn’t help his own cause by miming a shootout with teammates on the court before last night’s game.

Saying David Stern is “mean” probably didn’t help, either.

Arenas will lose $147,208 per game while suspended.
