Austin Freeman – leading scorer for seventeenth-ranked Georgetown – has been diagnosed with diabetes. It is unclear when he’ll be able to play again, but coach John Thompson III has said he’s certain Freeman will be able to return this season.
Freeman has been limited in recent games due to what was thought to be a virus. He was diagnosed with diabetes on Monday. The Hoyas close out the regular season with a game against Cincinnati on March 6. The Big East Tournament starts on March 9th.
We wish him the best of luck in getting his condition under control, and hope to see him on the court again soon.
Athletes with Diabetes
A growing number of diabetic athletes have been able to reach the highest levels of their sports, including Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, Olympic champion swimmer Bill Hall and major league pitcher Jason Johnson, who wore an insulin pump while on the mound.
The list of basketball players with diabetes includes Gonzaga star Adam Morrison and ex-NBA center Chris Dudley.
