Iverson’s Retirement Lasts One Week

by Charlie on December 7, 2009

One week ago, while America was stuck in traffic on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Stephen A. Smith broke the news of Allen Iverson’s retirement.

Today, that retirement is over. Iverson has accepted a one-year contract offer from the Sixers, ESPN.com reports.

The reversal isn’t much of a surprise. Iverson’s “retirement” was generally perceived as an act of frustration with his role and playing-time on a bad Memphis Grizzlies team. Most observers — myself included — assumed that he’d be back as soon as a starting job opened up, and that’s exactly what happened when Sixer guard Lou Williams suffered a broken jaw. Williams will be talking like Michael Corleone at Louis’ Restaurant for the next two months — and Iverson will, theoretically, be starting in his place.

At least one Internet report suggests Iverson could be in uniform for Monday’s game against the Nuggets.
