John Wall Puts on a Show at MSG

by Charlie on December 10, 2009

Madison Square Garden was packed for the second game of last night’s SEC/Big East Challenge Doubleheader between #4 Kentucky and #12 UConn.

By my — admittedly unofficial — count, about three-quarters of those in attendance were NBA scouts, hoping to get a look at Wildcat guard John Wall.

Wall didn’t disappoint. The freshman scored a career-high 25 points — including 12 of Kentucky’s last 15 — leading the Wildcats to a 64-61 win. With every game he plays, Wall further cements his status as the prohibitive favorite to be picked first overall in the 2010 NBA Draft.

St. John’s Improves to 7-1

In the first game, St. John’s improved to 7-1 on the season with a 66-56 win over the Georgia Bulldogs. The final score was closer than the game itself — Norm Roberts’ team was clearly uncomfortable playing with a lead and let the inexperienced Bulldogs make it interesting in the final minutes.

In fairness, the Johnnies haven’t had many leads in recent years.

Big Game on Tap

The SEC/Big East Challenge continues tonight with an outstanding matchup: #11 Florida against #6 Syracuse. Legendary coach Bob Knight — who worked last night’s MSG doubleheader as a game analyst for ESPN — is calling Syracuse the best team he’s seen this year.
