The Rockets and Kings have successfully integrated the Knicks in the Tracy McGrady/Kevin Martin deal. Here’s the rundown:
Rockets acquire:
- Kevin Martin (Kings)
- Jared Jeffries (Knicks)
- Jordan Hill (Knicks)
- Hilton Armstrong (Kings)
- Knicks first-round pick in 2012
- Right to swap first-round picks with the Knicks in 2011
Kings acquire:
- Carl Landry (Rockets)
- Larry Hughes (Knicks)
- Joey Dorsey (Rockets)
Knicks acquire:
- Tracy McGrady (Rockets)
- Sergio Rodriguez (Kings)
What does this all mean?
The Knicks get about $10 million in additional cap room this summer by jettisoning the contracts of Jeffries and Hill. They’ll now have the financial flexibility to make two max contract offers this summer… say, LeBron James and Chris Bosh. In the interim, they’re getting an extended look at McGrady and much-needed help at point guard in Rodriguez.
Houston has essentially decided to sit out the 2010 free-agent derby… but with Martin added to a nucleus that includes Aaron Brooks, Trevor Ariza and, in theory, a healthy Yao Ming, they should be a very tough competitor next season. And a strong defender like Jeffries actually fits in pretty well with Houston’s system.
Sacramento saves some cash and ends the “Tyreke Evans and Kevin Martin in the same backcourt” experiment that most observers knew was doomed to failure. Now they’ll have room under the cap to sign a significant free agent this summer as well.
