Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood will be joining the Mavericks for the stretch run, as part of a seven-player deal between Dallas and Washington.
The Mavs will get Butler, Haywood and guard DeShawn Stevenson. Josh Howard, Drew Gooden, Quinton Ross and James Singleton are headed to DC.
The motivation for the two teams involved couldn’t be more different; the Mavs are retooling in the hopes of challenging the Lakers for the top spot in the West, while the Wizards are simply jump-starting their rebuilding efforts. Butler is a highly-talented do-everything wing player that could be rejuvenated by the change of scenery, and Haywood will give Dallas a defensive anchor at center. Howard’s deal is not guaranteed for next season, Gooden and Singleton’s contracts expire at the end of this year, and Singleton — in NBA terms — makes very little money.
This deal could be an indication that Antawn Jamison will be the next player shipped out, with Cleveland a possible destination. Of course, it doesn’t solve the Wizards’ biggest salary cap issue: the $80 million they’re committed to pay Gilbert Arenas through the 2013-14 season.
