Most Valuable Franchise: The Lakers

by Charlie on December 10, 2009

The Lakers won another championship of sorts this week, named the most valuable franchise in the NBA in the annual list compiled by Forbes Magazine.

The Lakers are worth $607 million in the magazine’s estimation. That’s up four percent from last year. Pretty decent return on investment for owner Jerry Buss, who bought the team for $20 million back in 1979.

The top five franchises, ranked by overall value, were:

  1. Los Angeles Lakers
  2. New York Knicks (proving, I suppose, that winning isn’t everything)
  3. Chicago Bulls
  4. Detroit Pistons
  5. Cleveland Cavaliers

Least valuable? The lowly Milwaukee Bucks.
