Penn Coach Fired

by Charlie on December 14, 2009

Traditional Ivy League power Penn has fired coach Glen Miller after an 0-7 start. Assistant coach Jerome Allen — one of the best Penn players in recent memory — will take over the team on an interim basis.

Making Allen — who scored over 1,500 points for the Quakers — the interim coach may help revive fan interest in a team that has stuggled badly for the last two-plus seasons under Miller.

In-season coaching changes are relatively rare in college basketball, but Miller’s firing is the second of the year. Fordham fired coach Dereck Whittenberg (shooter of the most-famous air ball in NCAA Tournament history) earlier this month, after guard Jio Fontan announced his intention to transfer. Two other key Rams players transferred after last season. Assistant coach Jared Grasso is coaching the Rams on an interim basis.
