Portland Gets Camby, Fills Void at Center

by Charlie on February 18, 2010

The Portland Trail Blazers have filled the Greg Oden-shaped hole in the middle of their rotation, acquiring Marcus Camby from the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Blazers will send guard Steve Blake and forward Travis Outlaw, and $3 million of owner Paul Allen’s money, to the Clippers.

At first glance, the deal is a slam dunk. Camby fills an obvious need for Portland; the Blazers have been using aging veteran Juwan Howard in the middle since losing Oden and backup Joel Przybilla to serious knee injuries, and Camby obviously represents a major upgrade. And with Andre Miller and Jerryd Bayless in the fold, the loss of Blake shouldn’t sting all that much.

Shouldn’t. But might.

Here’s the problem: Brandon Roy has made it abundantly clear that he prefers playing with Blake over Miller. That’s no longer an option, and Portland’s best player might not be thrilled about that. Of course, if Roy’s hamstring injury doesn’t heal, that becomes a moot point.
