Sundiata Gaines’ Prayer Beats Cavs

by Charlie on January 15, 2010

Sundiata Gaines is on the absolute bottom layer of the NBA’s caste system — a D-Leaguer signed to a 10-day contract. He’s only playing with the big boys because the Jazz traded a promising rookie point guard – Eric Maynor – to save a couple of dollars. Guys like Gaines aren’t supposed to get crunch-time minutes for teams with playoff aspirations. And they certainly aren’t supposed to sink three-pointers at the buzzer to beat LeBron James and the Cavaliers.

But that’s what happened last night.

Of course, Gaines has a history of stepping up in big spots. College basketball fans may remember him as one of the key players on the Georgia Bulldog team that won three games in less than 24 hours to capture the SEC Title — and an NCAA Tournament berth — in 2008.
