Connecticut Women Win 71st Straight

by Charlie on March 9, 2010

UConn’s 59-44 win over Notre Dame in the Big East semifinals last night was the team’s 71st in a row — breaking the all-time record set by Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird and this same University of Connecticut between November 2001 and March 2003. Big Week for Connecticut

by Charlie on January 25, 2010

This time last week, the Connecticut Huskies were reeling — riding a three-game losing streak and about to lose hall-of-fame coach Jim Calhoun, who left the team to deal with an as-yet-unspecified medical problem, with games against St. John’s and top-ranked Texas looming. By my — admittedly unofficial — count, about three-quarters of those in attendance were NBA scouts, hoping to get a look at Wildcat guard John Wall. Wall didn’t disappoint. The freshman scored a [...]

Beasts in the East

by Charlie on December 10, 2009

After losing players like Connecticut’s Hasheem Thabeet and A.J. Price, Pitt’s Sam Young, DeJuan Blair and LeVance Fields, Syracuse’s Jonny Flynn, Louisville’s Terrence Williams and Villanova’s Dante Cunningham to graduation and the NBA Draft, this was supposed to be a “down” year for the Big East. Hasn’t really worked out that way. The conference boasts [...]
