It’s official, or soon will be… Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will reject overtures from the Pac 10, and the Big 12 will live on.
The league avoided the death penalty thanks to Dan Beebe’s pitch, which involves a fat new TV contract and a number of other perks. Texas will retain the option of creating its own TV network, which could be worth $5 million annually on top of the $25 million the university will receive from the conference.
Unfortunately, the Beebe plan simply reinforces the same structural issue that had Nebraska, Colorado (and Missouri, who will apparently be part of the ten-team Big 12) looking for a way out: uneven distribution of revenue. Case in point: as part of the Beebe plan, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Baylor and Mizzou will forfeit their shares of the buyout fees paid by Nebraska and Colorado. Their shares will go to Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma.
