My take on sportscasters is simple. There are some I love. There are some I can’t stand. But as much as I enjoy Marv Albert’s calls — and am annoyed by John Sterling’s play-by-play — I won’t watch a Nets game or turn off a Yankee game because of the announcers.
Game first. Announcers second.
So as much as I like having the CBS March Madness announcer lineup and schedule ahead of time — courtesy of The Big Lead — I’m not going to skip the Kentucky game just because the network is sending Dick Enberg and Jay Bilas to Jacksonville. But I will look forward to the action shifting to Providence (Bill Raftery/Verne Lundquist) and Buffalo (Gus Johnson/Len Elmore).
Oh, and note to TBL — Spero Dedes, the new kid on the block, is the latest in a long and distinguished line of sportscasters to come out of Fordham University… a list that includes venerable Los Angeles Dodgers voice Vin Scully, NBA announcer Mike Breen, Michael Kay of the YES Network and ESPN Radio, and Knicks analyst John “Johnny Hoops” Andariese.
(Fordham is also the official alma mater of About Basketball… and Spero’s about the closest we’ll get to participating in March Madness.)
