Wizards, Guns and Money

by Charlie on January 3, 2010

Two Washington Wizard players threatened each other with handguns in a locker-room dispute involving gambling debts, the New York Post is reporting.

According to unnamed sources, guard Javaris Crittenton was arguing with teammate Gilbert Arenas about an unpaid gambling debt when Arenas pulled out a pistol. Crittenton, in response, produced his own gun.

Arenas’ name has been associated with guns in the news since Christmas, when reports that Arenas was storing unloaded firearms in his locker at the Wizards’ home arena began to surface in the media. Today’s story is the first indication that he ever threatened anyone with a gun, or that any other member of the team was similarly armed.

Isn’t it Ironic?

The Washington franchise was known as the Bullets until 1997. Owner Abe Pollin changed the team name in an effort to disassociate the team with the D.C. area’s troubled history of crime and, in particular, gun violence.
