USA Basketball’s women’s national team will face a formidable opponent as part of their preparations for the 2010 FIBA World Championships: the WNBA’s All-Star team. Team USA and the All-Stars will play an exhibition on July 10 at the Mohegan Sun Arena — home of the WNBA’s Connecticut Suns.
This is the second time a team of WNBA All-Stars will face the national squad. In 2004, as part of their preparations for the Athens Olympics, Team USA played a team of top WNBA players at Radio City Music Hall. Team USA won that game, 74-58, and went on to capture a gold medal in Greece.
Team USA is coached by Connecticut’s Geno Auriemma. Auriemma’s Huskies are the reigning national champions, and have been ranked number one for a record-tying 36 consecutive polls.
